SUSTAINABILITY
Respect for the community and the environment is one of Magnesita’s values. In virtue of this fact, it establishes sustainable relationships, maintaining a permanent dialogue with its various audiences.
COMMUNITY
In the city of Brumado (BA) [State of Bahia], Magnesita sponsors the Digital Citizenship project, contributing to the maintenance of an Information Technology laboratory in Vila Presidente Vargas, which benefits hundreds of people. In 2009, it established a partnership with Senai (National Service for Industrial Learning) and the city hall, making it possible to offer free training events for the community.
The company also supports the “Vila Acaba Mundo” community, in Belo Horizonte (MG) [State of Minas Gerais], contributing with improvements on the building devoted to the community center extension, and with the implementation of professional courses of cooking, costume jewelry and sewing, as well as dental, environmental education and communication programs.
Magnesita is today one of the largest companies that sponsor cultural projects in the State of Minas Gerais. In 2009, R$ 1,036,500.00 were dedicated to projects approved by the State Law for Incentives to Culture. When it supports cultural initiatives in several areas, it grants access to different artistic experiences to the community and its collaborators.
ENVIRONMENT
As a holder of significant mineral reserves in Brazil, China, the United States and Europe, for Magnesita environmental preservation is, above all, a guarantee of the sustainability of its businesses. From those mines magnesite sinter and dolomite used in the production of refractory products are extracted. The mining activities are planned aiming at protecting the entire surroundings of the mine, recovering annually approximately 45,000 m² of mined area.
Magnesita uses filters to avoid and/or to reduce residue emissions into the atmosphere. Additionally, it systematically promotes reforestation, monitoring recycled water quality and environmental education programs not only for its employees, but also for the benefit of neighboring communities. The company is also developing a project to create a Natural Patrimony Private Reservation (RPPN).
CERTIFICATIONS
Magnesita’s Environmental Management System (SGA) was certified in conformity with the ISO 14001 international standards relative to its operations in the industrial city of Contagem (MG), Brumado (BA), the Maritime Terminal of Aratu (BA), and Serra (ES) [State of Espírito Santo]. SGA is also in its implementation phase for other operations.
