Selection of refractory products
Dolomite bricks have a 90% market share in AOD stainless steel converters. This is because dolomite represents a low cost-per-ton refractory product, as well as allowing the manufacturer to operate with basic slags that favor clean steel, low sulfur contents and metal oxide recovery (chrome) from the slag. Conventional dolomite bricks are used in the low wear areas. In high wear areas (tuyeres and tuyere zone, slag line, trunnions, alloy impact) magnesia-enriched dolomite bricks are specified.
Mag-chrome bricks are sometimes used when special steel grades are produced (aluminum deoxidized), and in small vessels, both of which can lead to unusually high bath temperatures.
To obtain the best possible performance in terms of refractory life and cost, it is important to zone the areas of the vessel by a combination of thickness and chemical composition of the bricks.
