Magnesita has a full range of refractory products used in continuous casting tundishes, as well as slag conditioning materials. The company is prepared to offer appropriate solutions for the most varied operational conditions and types of steel produced:
• For safety linings – several types of refractory concretes are available for cast safety linings. Fired alumina bricks are available if this construction method is preferred.
• For working lining – spray mixes are available with a diverse range of MgO contents. A full line of dry vibratable products is also produced. All required tundish furniture shapes are also manufactured by Magnesita (impact pads, diffusers, dams, weirs).
Besides refractory materials, Magnesita also supplies all the necessary equipment for their application.
Computer simulation of molten steel flow
One of the most important aspects of tundish performance is the effective removal of non-metallic inclusions from the steel to the slag cover. To achieve this, the diffuser (i.e. turbulence suppressor) and other refractory tundish furniture must give the required molten steel flow patterns that bring the steel in contact with the slag cover, minimize dead spots and short circuits, and promote even temperature distribution.
Computer numerical simulation is an essential tool in determining the optimal configurations of refractory tundish furniture. The numerical simulation tools of Magnesita use the solution of Navier-Stokes equations. It is able to provide important information such as field speeds, temperature distribution, shearing stress in refractory walls and turbulent kinetic energy. This information permits a precise determination of the optimal tundish configuration, as well as the characteristic volumes and residence time of the molten steel.
The methodology of numerical simulation used by Magnesita has already been validated by several physical models in reduced scale and also in practice by means of using tracers in the molten steel.
Magnesita is prepared to determine the optimal configuration of the refractory in the tundish in line with the intended objectives of the steelmaker (quality improvement, operational safety, among others), as well as to implement those solutions in the tundish. To support this it has the Research and Development Center and a qualified team of technical support professionals.
