The steel production process using the Electric Arc Furnace has greatly advanced, requiring refractory producers to develop new products, equipment and services to meet the operational needs.

The newer EAF operational advancements include:

• Use of fixed lances and increased fossil fuel and oxygen energy inputs;
• Foamy slag practices;
• High power input rates;
• Use of alternative iron units and the addition of molten pig iron to the charge;
• Gas injection at the bottom of the EAF;
• Constant need for increased equipment availability and reduced power consumption.

Development of specific solutions

To follow up all these innovations and to make it possible to have better equipment availability and better operational safety, Magnesita, through the Technical Support and Services Department develops technical solutions via specific process studies, computer simulations, slag practice recommendations, and the application of new refractory products. The Technical Support team also provides refractory engineering and assembly supervision, providing equipment for assembly and maintenance of the electric arc furnace.

Furthermore, the Research Center carries out the development of new products and post-mortem studies.

Magnesita manufactures a full range of products for the initial lining, lining repairs, and hot repairs of all areas of the Electric Furnace:

• Magnesia bricks (fired) for the safety lining;
• Mag-carbon bricks for the working lining;
• Dry vibratable bottom materials;
• Bank repair materials;
• Gunning mixes;
• Delta roofs;
• EBT taphole sand;
• Gas injection system through the bottom;
• Slag conditioners.
